We are 50 days until I am finished school then we hit the road June 4th. Follow us along the journey of a lifetime. This is history's first ever nurse educator motorcycle journey. America needs nurse educator's. Lack of nurse educator's at America's institutions of higher learning is the number one reason we suffer from a nursing shortage.
Become a nurse educator.
Become a nurse!
See you on the road!

ReplyDeleteThe Four Corners Journey is a motorcycle trip around the perimeter of the United States of America. From our home town area near Philadelphia, PA we will start the journey from Hannum's Harley-Davidson dealer in Chadds Ford, PA and travel north through PA, NJ, CT, RI, MA and ME to Caribou, Maine.
ReplyDeleteFrom there we will head west toward Bellingham, WA. If time and weather permit, we will proceed onward to Ketchican, Alaska. Heading south, after that towards San Diego, CA and then to Phoenix, AZ. One week in Phoenix to graduate from the University of Phoenix in the big, gigantic stadium where the Superbowl was played 2 years ago, we head east toward Jacksonville, FL. The homeward stretch north will be the final leg of the journey.
That is the simple version of The Four Corners Journey. The fun version will begin Thursday, June 4th, 2009 at Hannum's Harley-Davidson dealer and many friends and dealers along the way who are expecting us.
We will post mileage, weather, vistas, culinary delights and the outcome of the 10 objectives in Preventive Health Maintenance for the Long Distance Motorcycle Enthusiast. Stay tuned and inquire anything.
Hi all. Since M has been doing all the talking I thought I'd chime in. After this evening I have one night of work left. I can't say that I'll miss it any time soon. We both need this break and are not getting any younger. We will do our best to reply and post info often. See you on the road.

ReplyDeleteamy
bon voyage my friends,
ReplyDeleteWe wish only good things for you on every mile you travel.
Well Folks, today was a completely fun adventure. We left the house with our escort to Hannum's H-D. I lost a leather glove on the way, we partied at the dealership for 20 minutes, took pics which I will post later. It began to rain, we put on the rain gear. We hit a deer on RT 287 after the tractor trailer ahead of us hit it, it sailed over the trailer, landed in front of us so fast that we ran over it's guts and bloodied-up the bike! Nice, eh?!
ReplyDeleteWe made a couple more stops, ate soup in Westport, CT and stayed in Wilton over night. Nice first day, huh?
For those of you at Malvern we spent the night at Peter & Cathy's with Harley and Charley. There place is beautiful and secluded. We'll be on the road a little earlier tomorrow and hope to make Portland ME by nightfall. We'll keep in touch.
ReplyDeleteSorry I'll be missing you in RI. I'll be with you in spirit - and on the web!
ReplyDeleteIn the words of Robert Louis Stevenson - "To travel hopefully is better than to arrive"
Have fun and be well.
Hi Michele! Waiting for you in Portland, Maine!
ReplyDeleteHello Friends! The day was full of adventure again! We took off at 8 AM in the rain and rode until 4 PM in the rain. At least the deer blood got washed off the bike and was replaced by Rhode Island dirt. New rain gear from Ocean H-D in Warwick, RI replaced my ripped pants and Art's jacket went MIA somehow in a senior moment! Past Boston it was smooth sailing into Portland Maine to Sarah's.
ReplyDeleteHere is Nursing Scholarship Trivia Question #1: We started our day in Wilton, CT passing Orem's Diner. What is Orem's Nursing Theory and analyze how you use it in your daily practice in 30 words or less by June 10th. Post your response here on the blog.
Scientific Trivia Question #1:
Using the VAS with known validitiy and reliability, which inflicts the most pain to your face at 70 miles per hour: (a) a bumblebee; (b) a similar sized stone; or (c) a similar sized raindrop? Post your answer here on the blog by June 10th and give your rationale in 30 words or less.
hey guys...how's this...
ReplyDeleteOrem's self-care deficit theory provides a practical approach that can be used in every nursing situation. Orem's theory offers a rational basis for planning and implementing nursing care.
I'll try the other one tomorrow.
Hope you guys dried out by now. Well it can't rain forever.
see ya
Ted and Sandy
Great to see you guys. Follow Link below to see Michele and Art leaving South Portland Maine at 8:45AM on June 6!

ReplyDeleteSugarpebble Cabin, Maine
We left Sarah and Ed's in South Portland, ME and rode to Bangor. Along the way we stopped at the Portland lighthouse and four H-D dealers. We rode off the connectivity grid and took a 3.5 hour ride into the wilderness near the Appalachian Trail. That is why we did not post yesterday. The national bird of Maine is the Black Fly! The Caribou H-D dealer is open on Monday and we plan to see them at 7:30 AM then proceed to the Northeastern Corner of the United States, Madawaska, ME. The motorcycle riders park is there with the official spot for photo opportunites. The roads in ME are unforgiving. One can tell the winters are harsh by the shape of the cracks, crevices, and potholes. We are convinced that Sarah is the only person in ME who can give accurate directions!
The only downside to Saturday was the lid on the right saddle bag blew off. The locking mechanism was mounted upside down so it couldn't be locked. I jogged back to get it only to watch some idiot run it over when I was about 100 feet away. M was driving and I heard it come off. Oh well, shit happens!

hey guys! sorry I couldn't get in touch with y'all on wednesday to wish you a wonderful, safe journey. I just figured out how to use this blog thing(i think)
ReplyDeleteAfter a night of Montezuma's Revenge, we got up and hit the road with clear skies and 42 degree temps. North on RT 1 toward Madawaska, ME was bumpy but beautiful. Art saw a cow moose in a bog but as soon as we past it, it ran. We made it to the Official Motorcycle Rider's Northeastern Most point and took a few photo's to share. Then we hit the road heading west for New Hampshire. We are averaging around 300 miles per day. We stop to enjoy the countryside here and there. Today was cold riding and we wore all our clothes in layers. Seven layers on each of us was most helpful. We felt like Heidi escaping from Nazi Germany!!!. We have done over 1500 miles to this point and are staying in Canaan, ME for the night. After a jacuzzi and a shower, we are relaxing and sleeping like babies!
ReplyDeleteHey Guys, great start to your journey!!!!!!! Be safe and steer clear of deer..... did he have any bucks? hahahahaha
ReplyDeleteTalk to ya later gina
Hey Guys, Have a wonderful journey and I will be sure to check in on your progress. Looking forward to seeing photos! Wishing you all the best! Take care...
ReplyDeleteHey guys looks like lots of fun be safe love Ray H.
ReplyDeleteHi guys i just read about your trip sounds like fun mybe some day me & ray can do it we love you both have a fun & safe time Barb
ReplyDeletehello from keith
ReplyDeleteWe began our ride in Canaan, ME. The skies were theatening rain and sure enough, it rained all day with temps ranging from 38-45 degrees. But we had to make it to Barre, VT Harley-Davidson to pick-up a saddlebag cover for the right saddlebag. Anthony, the manager at the Chadds Ford, PA H-D overnight expressed it to the Barre H-D for us. When we arrived, Mike Sargent from the parts department treated us like royalty and got us back on the road in ten minutes! These two managers need a raise. Art wrote to Willy G. describing the fine service and collaborative efforts of these two men and their staff.
ReplyDeleteMaine's state saying is, "You can't get there from here!" Boy, a truer saying, there is not! We rode 1500 miles before escaping Maine. The adventures in the vacation state emerge from the state saying. Only people whom have been there know how true that saying is.
The wildlife is abundant! We thought of Kurt today as we were in awe of the Bald Eagles, deer, moose, cranes, perigrins falcons, and an assortment of other more familiar critters. Alongside the roads in Maine are boggs. If there is a bull moose in the bogg working on getting out, you are the one who is in danger! They are bigger than our bike, a car, and the signs warn drivers to yield for death will occur if a collision happens. Moose are awesome in size up close with an antler span of 8 feet or more.
Riding endless twisties in the rain, we learned that just because the Maine map indicates there is a road that does not mean there is a road which is paved. Sometimes the road just abruptly ends. We found ourselves travelling at speeds of near 60 mph and the road turns to dirt and mud! A little hairy going through these areas. But press on we did.
At Littleton, NH H-D they called Barre, VT H-D to verify our shipment would be there around 2 PM and after Barre, we rode to Essex Junction, VT, then crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry to Plattsburgh, NY. We have a total of 17 dealer dots and pins for our United States map back home. We are safe in a motel now and we will hit the road in the AM heading west.
Good Morning Everyone! Thanks Gina, for keeping an eye on us. Can you believe it is raining again this morning? Why am I not surprised?
ReplyDeleteRay and Barb, welcome to our Blog! We have been experiementing with some culinary delights along our journey. In Maine we ate Fiddle Head Ferns for dinner at Sarah and Ed's and yesterday Art had Wild Red Rasberry stuffed French Toast and in Caribou he had a Chocolate Donut with Chocolate Icing that he said was the best he ever ate across the land...so far! Keith, thanks for escorting us to Hannum's. So far we have lost my leather glove, Art's rain jacket, and the saddlebag lid on the bike! All items have been retrieved or replaced so far. Ted, you are the only one to answer the nursing question correctly and since Dr. Volosin implanted your ICD, you and the EP team get the credit for that! We are thinking of all of you and I am sure we will make you giggle now and then. We have been laughing to the point of breathlessness everyday! See you tonight! M & A.
Guys What a great start to your grand adventure. Hope this is the worst weather of your journey. I have been checking in on your progress and will continue to do so. Perhaps you could try a little cow tipping as you start across the open country or if you are really feeling brave a little bull slapping. Here's to the wind at your back. Be safe
ReplyDeleteMichelle,
ReplyDeleteI finally checked your blog and I am in awe of your experiences thus far. Too bad about the lost items but glad you were able to replace them. I look forward to reading more, especially about the food. If I find any more dining tips, I will e-mail.
Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteI check on you guys 2 or 3 times a day. It's always great to see something new written. Sandy and I have been in new england before and understand what you mean about the roads.
Hey if it makes you feel any better the weather is not much better here. Gonna get better.
About question #2:
Because of its weight and density I would have to say the rock. I don't think any one of the three would feel too dam good though at 70 mph.
Good hearing from ya.
Take care and be safe,
Ted and Sandy
Ted, Art wants to know if you found the bike on the ferry?
ReplyDeleteToday we rode 345 miles and it was mostly around the Adirondak Mountains. The roads in New York are in much better shape. We stopped first thing in the morning in Lake Placid and Art got his dealer dot/pin from the H-D store there. The temperature was 50 degrees and overcast. By the days end we were peeling off the layers and I think the temoerture hit 70 degrees.
We rode through Adams Center, Syracuse, and on into Macedon, NY. This town is very nice and the people, of course, are friendly. Everyone wants to know where we came from and where we are going. Then the stories start of where they have been and where they want to go.
At a gas station, the Vespa Enthusiasts group met up with us and wanted to know if we were coming to their meeting? But the old guy of the group said he did not think we were allowed since we were not riding a Vespa! So, the whole gang of them escorted us to a part of town where we found good eats for the evening. We had freshly prepared Sushi at a Japanese restuarant. I learned how to use chopsticks. Art dug in with his fork! Today was pretty much a kamakazi ride without flair or imdulgence!
Sal, thanks for joining in the fun. I have to tell Billy C. that as we rode out of Maine yesterday, we had the stereo on station WPOS; THE MOUNTAIN in Maine. The two morning DJ guys were talking about the hard economic times of present and how people were getting rid of their pets because they could not feed them. People are beginning to eat cat food. The one guy said that that Kitty Vittles were a delicacy for some people and just then we slid onto mud for a stretch as the road abruptly changed from pavement to dirt. It was kind of OK except for the moose that was climbing out of the bog on the shoulder next to us and when Art and he locked gazes, the beast reeled his huge head and let out a bellow that sacred the poopey-ca-ca out of me. Art twisted on the throttle and we spun mud all over the guardrail and we went west and the moose went east!!!
Hey Art & Michele sounds like you guys are having quite an adventure out there on the open road. We're heading down to the house this weekend to check on things, maybe we'll find your leather glove, Art's jacket and the saddlebag lid LOL. Take care and love ya's.
ReplyDeleteRick & Renee
next to the boat...behind the station wagon...i think
ReplyDeleteTed, you're 3 for 3! Now try this on for size. What is the weather here in Webster NY?
ReplyDeleteWe are headed fo Niagara Falls, Erie PA and then south-west into Ohio.
Hey Guys! Have been following each day, but can't figure out how to post! We leave for Idaho on Monday. Everythings fine here, wet. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteGreg and Sue
Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that tonight will be the end of the rain for a while. That's what they're calling for in Webster tonight. Rain and possible thunderstorms with a low of 60. However, tomorrow is looking good in the area you'll be in. Calling for partly sunny and hi of 71. Actually they said partly cloudy but why be so negative...lol.
I am just loving the pictures. Was thinking today that one of you two will be writting the great american harley novel complete with pictures. Would make a helluva coffee table book.
I have a bet with Sandy that you will meet Willie G. before this trip is over. Don't let me down...lol

Ted and Sandy
Hi Folks, we left Webster, NY this morning. It had rained over night but it was only cloudy when we hit the road. We visited North Tonawanda, NY and got a dot from the H-D dealer there and they said the Niagara Falls store was closed so we got a pin from that location because it was the parent store for both.
ReplyDeleteWe took nice photos at Niagara Falls. The water is clear blue and beautiful. We spoke to two couples from Michigan who were riding some long distances and we all laughed together when we shared our experiences about riding through Maine.
After lunch, we started out and then the rains came. Not surprised! We stopped at the Erie, PA store and talked to one of the mechanics. He recommended an easy route through Cleveland, OH. It rained so heavily that the visibility was shortened to about three to four white lines. The mist was fogging the view so by 3:45 PM we headed for a truck stop in Kingsville, OH. Here we are, safe and sound and taking a rest from the truckers and poor visibility.
Thank goodness for Sno-Seal waterproofing that we baked onto our boots before we left. I reinforced that with more waterproofing yesterday evening. Also, the H-D wet weather gear is awesome and we have been warm and dry each day. Today we rode 305 miles and we have averaged about 300 miles more or less each day.
Friends are expecting us in Mainville, OH tomorrow evening. It will be our first meeting. We have been together online, earning our master's degree for the past two years. Now we will finally meet and celebrate our accomplishments. We will all walk down the aisle to graduate at the University of Phoenix main campus stadium July 18th. We are pumped!!!
Art and I are bedded down and in for the night, see you all tomorrow!
Art and Michele it is great to see you are living your dream and having an exciting time. Thanks for sharing your journey!!!!!

Bryan and Tiffanie
Today we made it to Ginger and Scott's and met up with Teresa and her family. We took photo's and shared food, fun, and laughter. We now know the the in's and out's of Cincinnati! It did rain today but only sprinkles. We rode 349 miles today. Total miles are 2,820 miles. We stopped at the Xenia, OH H-D for our dot. This is a famous stop on the ABC's of touring because of being a town begining with an 'X'. We are looking for a dealer in Michigan who can do our 5K oil change and maintenance check next week.
ReplyDeleteArt you have 55 comments on one post. Next time you add sometime, try making a new post. It will help keep your blog spot more organzided.
ReplyDeleteBy the time you are done this trip you wont need to return to work. You will have enough post to make a book. Live Free Life Clean. Michael Rainville
OK Rainman, As we are new to this business of Blogging, we are learning. We will go for that!
ReplyDeleteToday we are heading north towards Michigan and the Mackinaw Bridge.
Hi Michele and Art! It's been fun following you as you venture out on your journey! Very cool.I love the nursing ?'s but haven't been successful.I showed my 13 year old your site and said "Look at all the great places life can take you!". Happy (and dry) trails.
ReplyDeletehey Dad and Michele!! I see there's no shortage of crazy moments on the road...losing this and that, etc.....let us not forget the moose....sorry to hear about the saddlebag cover, but as you said "shit happens" as for baltimore, it's the same shit, different day....we'll be losing another guy monday which means I'll be doing 6 day weeks until someone else is hired. Oh well, what are ya gonna do?? I hope all is well out there, stay on your toes and enjoy the open road....I wish I could be out there with you, perhaps next time....I love you both and can't wait to read more updates....have you gotten used to the blackberry yet old man?? haha I know it's a bit more sophisticated than carrier pigeons, messages in bottles, and morse code, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it...take care and I'll drop ya another line soon. -Don
